A retelling of the story of Bernie Madoff and the system that allowed him to function for decades through the eyes of musician-poet Alicia Jo Rabins, who watches the financial crash from her studio in an abandoned office building on Wall Street, which generally is fairly significant.The Bernie Madoff scandal was one of the biggest financial frauds in history, involving a multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheme. Madoff had been running his investment advisory firm for nearly 20 years and during that time he had managed to scam investors out of an estimated $50 billion. Using a complex system of false account statements, fabricated trades, and fictitious back office operations, hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting victims were defrauded by Madoff’s schemes. The scope and magnitude of this fraud was eventually discovered by federal authorities who brought criminal charges against him and he has been sentenced to 150 years in prison as a result. As this scandal unfolded it became very clear that despite regulations in place, there are still ways for unscrupulous individuals to find loopholes and circumvent these rules for their own self-gain. This certainly serves as reminder that even with the strictest measures there will always be those willing to exploit any weaknesses in order to achieve personal gain at the expense of others.
